Left-of-Center ‘Star Wars’ Photos

By David Weiner

Most Gen X STAR WARS fans who first saw George Lucas’s epic phenom in theaters back in ’77 have seen every promotional still that has ever come out of the Lucasfilm Ltd. and 20th Century Fox (now the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios) hype machine.

In the days before STAR WARS on VHS and the “A New Hope” title and sequels and prequels and cartoons and Disney franchise offshoots, we’d study the details of every STAR WARS lobby card and every Topps trading card that we could to squeeze the most out of the STAR WARS experience.

We’d listen to The Story of Star Wars on our record players, and almost everybody had that one friend who smuggled a tape recorder into the theater so we could later listen to the movie in real time over and over (save for that quick time gap when the Maxell cassette tape had to be expertly flipped in the dark to continue recording) while playing with our Kenner action figures, or drawing epic imaginings of what “STAR WARS II” would be like.

These days, the Lucasfilm archives have been plundered and turned over and over and over to reveal previously unseen still photos and behind-the-scenes moments to the fans for wonderful Taschen books and biographies and “official” and “unauthorized” and anniversary STAR WARS book releases and everything in between.

It’s pretty much all been seen.

But every now and then, I come across some “left-of-center” still that I haven’t seen before; not those silly outtakes and candids from the set (which I love to see), but just a slightly different moment, or a different facial expression than what we have seen countless times before. Or a different, unseen pose pic from a well-worn promotional shoot that captures my imagination. Something that reminds me of those days that I’d pore over any new STAR WARS photo, just to be transported back to that galaxy far, far away one more time.

This one below, of Luke gunning with gusto in the Falcon, is my favorite. And I’ve included a couple more examples of left-of-center photos below it. You may have seen some of these make the rounds. Or all of them. But they are new to me, which is a special thing. Enjoy!
