‘In Search of Darkness’ Turns Five!

By David Weiner

Time sure flies when you’re steeped in genre documentary filmmaking…

It’s incredible to think that five years have already passed since my longform ’80s horror documentary In Search of Darkness held its World Premiere at Beyond Fest, the largest genre film fest in the United States, at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, CA on October 6, 2019.

That Sunday evening, several CREATORVC team members, CEO Robin Block, and I were joined on the red carpet by In Search of Darkness interview talent including Barbara Crampton, Katie Featherston, Mick Garris, Spencer Hickman, Eric Kurland, Kelli Maroney, Robbi Morgan, Caroline Williams, Heather Wixson and Brian Yuzna, with a lively Q&A held on stage for a packed, enthusiastic crowd before screening the four-plus-hour documentary (divided into two parts with an intermission halfway through).

It was the first time that a live audience of supportive family, friends, critics, and devoted genre fans were collectively seeing all of our hard work and passion for the genre “spool out” onscreen. Watching with a receptive crowd and hearing their cheers, nostalgic laughter, and enthusiastic applause was one of the most rewarding emotional states I’ve experienced; it felt like we’d caught the proverbial lightning in a bottle.

In the years following the wonderful reception of In Search of Darkness, a surprising thing has happened: The fan base for the film has grown considerably, and the demand for more, similar CREATORVC productions has only increased. That has led to the delivery of more longform documentaries: In Search of Darkness: Part II in 2020, In Search of Tomorrow and In Search of Darkness: Part III in 2022, FPS: First Person Shooter in 2023, Aliens Expanded in 2024, and In Search of Darkness: 1990-1994 this fall, with The Thing Expanded expected in 2025.

With In Search of Darkness: 1990-1994 around the corner, we’ve decided to proudly proclaim October 6th as “Darkness Day” in celebration of the In Search of Darkness five-year anniversary/kick-off of the In Search of Darkness franchise.

Keep an eye out on our @‌80shorrordoc socials for some special treats, including a free 24-hour In Search of Darkness marathon** to prime you for Spooky Season!

**October 6, 2024 only***

Thanks for your continued support,
